Whitechapel Market Then And Now

May 7, 2015

Although I’ve done all different kinds of photography my passion is for street photography. I always carry a camera with me when I go out and so I have an East End archive of over 30 years. You might think I could now be bored from photographing the same places over and over again but I am still as enthusiastic as I was decades ago. Whitechapel Market is a changing place but it still is a place for bargains and reasonably priced food. Here are some photographs of the old and the new Whitechapel market. I don’t think it has changed very much but in the near future it is going to be seriously under threat from developers who will want to ‘upgrade’ the market and build ‘affordable’ homes. Potentially this will mean people won’t be able to afford the market and housing will be too expensive. My Whitechapel archive is a celebration of the lives of the thousands of people who have used the market over the past decades.
