Cheshire Street East London

May 28, 2019

In the 1980s the ‘Brick Lane Sunday market’ used to attract people looking for a bargain from all over the East End. Today it is a shadow of it’s former self and is flooded with tourists who mistakenly believe they are sampling the real East End. Taken in Cheshire Street the subjects in the photograph are watching the entertaining sales banter of a stall holder. The abandoned floral arm chair is a convenient resting place for a smoke. The apple, armchair, cigarette, cardboard boxes and Cinzano shopping bag enhance the image but it was the two characters watching the market that persuaded me to press the camera shutter.
