Seven Stars Brick Lane

February 7, 2011

The former Seven Stars pub on Brick Lane had quite a reputation for ‘erotic dancing’. There were two bars. The one at the back facilitated drinking and conversation without interruption from live entertainment. I have fond memories of the place and regret that it has been closed for many years. The building nevertheless has served as a magnet for graffiti artists and fly posters over the years. Today I can reveal a moment in the back bar which captures a history not revealed, inspired or related to the daubing outside.

The exterior of the pub has changed rapidly on a weekly basis.  The more recent photograph below illustrates the side entrance and the ‘public art’ it attracted.

Do you know whether it’s still there? I can’t find it on Google Maps and whenever I type in “49 brick lane”, which should be the official address, it gives me some police office building. :S

As a 14 yr old, one night around ’83 I saw a guy leaving the Seven Stars shouting back thru the front door, a glistening stab wound in the arm, then marching off defiantly .. dad thought I was telling fibs so next morning showed him the evidence, large dots of claret along the Lane and up Fashion St

Pretty rough street back then, esp at the Frying Pan !
