Insect & Plant Art

May 5, 2019

The image below was made from a photograph I took of a deceased ‘daddy long legs’ I found by the window in the bedroom.

Insects are at risk from climate change but they might survive longer than humans. Given the fact that fossil fuel companies and their insatiable thirst for profits are destroying the planet I thought I should show some respect to this dead Scouse insect and make a token remembrance of its brief life.

‘Extinction insect’. Mixed media on card. Measuring 210 x 297 mm.

Since childhood I’ve always been fascinated by the architecture of plants and, in particular, dandelions. Close examination always reveals marvellous graphic design and symmetry. I’ve tried to capture this with the image below – based on a photograph I took of a single dandelion in Greece last year.

I really like this artwork. Great celebration of the life of the daddy-long-legs, an extinction rebellion in itself! I like the dandelion clocks too, and 2019 is proving a great year for dandelions.
