Crosby Beach

August 4, 2018

It’s impossible not to be impressed by the 100 spectacular cast-iron, life-size figures by Anthony Gormley at Crosby beach. They are spread across three kilometres of the foreshore and stretch almost one kilometre out to sea. Every day you look at the installation will be different. Here are some stills I shot in 2014. I also filmed them knowing the footage could be used for a variety of projects. So far the footage has been used in the film Austerity Fight. I can’t wait to go back and repeat the process.

Campaign To Save Oglet Shore In Liverpool

August 3, 2018

John Whittaker the “publicity shy billionaire” is a key figure behind plans to pour concrete over the only remaining piece of green belt in South Liverpool. Mr Whittaker is the founder of the Peel Group and the controlling company, Tokenhouse Ltd, is based in the nearest tax haven, the Isle of Man.

Proposals to extend the runway at John Lennon airport will wreck the wildlife corridor that is important to scousers who have used the area for recreational purposes for generations. Since Peel arrived on the scene walkways have been allowed to fall into disrepair and public right of ways have been blocked. The new proposals pose a serious threat to wild life and endangered species. If they go ahead the people of Speke in particular will suffer even poorer air quality than they currently are forced to endure. Doctors at the Royal Liverpool Hospital have noted, “From Wirral to St Helens, legal limits of air pollution are broken in every single local authority in the Liverpool City Region”. The situation will worsen if the airport is expanded.

Whittaker speculates in land and property from the comfort of a tax haven. Peel has huge assets: over 1.2 million square metres of property and 15,000 hectares of “strategic” land and water. They own the Manchester Ship Canal connecting Salford and Manchester to Liverpool, where Peel also owns Liverpool Docks. Opposition to this ongoing speculative land grab is growing daily. In a matter of weeks over 2,500 signatures have been collected against the expansion. This is how Oglet shore looks now – but for how long?
