Brick Lane Book Launch At The Rich Mix Centre
My book ‘Brick Lane’ will be launched on April 3rd at the Rich Mix Centre in Bethnal Green. You are invited to the launch which begins at 6pm. At 8pm pianist and composer Lola Perrin will play her music to three short films by Hazuan Hashim and Phil Maxwell. Refreshments (sponsored by Trumans and the Rich Mix) will be provided.
Phil Maxwell is the photographer of Brick Lane. Over the last thirty years, no-one has taken more pictures there than he and his astonishing body of work stands unparalleled in the canon of street photography, both in its range and in the quality of human observation that informs these eloquent images.
Spitalfields Life Books is publishing a beautifully-produced three hundred page book of Phil Maxwell’s dramatic photographs of Brick Lane in the East End of London in chronological sequence, telling the story of volatile social change on one of Britain’s most celebrated streets from 1982 until the present day.
Accompanying exhibition opens with book launch at 6pm on Thursday 3rd April at Rich Mix Cultural Centre.
Phil Maxwell will be giving presentations of his pictures and talking about thirty years on Brick Lane at the Bishopsgate Institute on 10th April at 7:30pm and Waterstones Piccadilly on 14th May at 7pm.
