Bath in the Kitchen and City Bonuses

September 30, 2012

There is probably no greater example of the gulf that exists in this country between the rich and the poor than the Holland Estate and the City with its banks and bonuses for its bosses. The Holland Estate remains defiant as it snuggles up next to the the boundary of the City of London. Over the years the social housing on the estate has been greatly improved. Despite this the incomes of the occupants on the estate remain stubbornly low with the majority of the children in receipt of free school meals. I remember first photographing the Estate in 1984 and recall my amazement that the bathroom also doubled with the kitchen. When the bath wasn’t being used a lid was placed over it to create a table and space for food preparation.

My new camera deserves a special debut so here is a picture of Brick Lane (below) followed by a collage of Brick Lane which is a detail of a much larger piece using multiple images.

Brick Lane Multiple Images

September 28, 2012

The two photographs below were part of a series of multiple images which were framed together in a single piece of work. I have always been interested in the relationship between people and the built environment; the technique of making multiple images from the same spot is an interesting way to explore this relationship.

Holland Estate Photomontage

September 27, 2012

This is photomontage comprises of two disparate sections. However you could be forgiven for thinking there were three with the Gherkin in the City of London towering behind the social housing on the Holland Estate just off Petticoat Lane.
