New & Second Hand
You can buy virtually anything new or second hand in the East End. Most derelict sites have been utilised for car boot sales before they were ‘regenerated’. The women below were selling goods at the bottom of Vallance Rd on a site which has now been utilised for housing.
The numerous street markets in Tower Hamlets provide an alternative to mainstream shopping. Market traders often have communication skills which embrace the finest traditions of music hall.

Street Talk
The Lady below lived just off Brick Lane and would spend a lot of her day talking to herself and at the same time trying to engage passers by in conversation. She always wore the same white coat and would usually have a plastic bag with some food inside. One of her favourite spots was the bridge on Brick Lane.
I photographed the TV presenter below as she did a ‘live relay’ from Time Square, I always felt the old Lady on Brick Lane had stories to tell which would eclipse anything the TV presenter was capable of sharing with her audience.
