Save Oglet Shore Campaign Strengthens!
Around 90 people attended a recent Save Oglet Shore fundraising event at the Metal Box Factory in Speke. Over £600 was raised for the campaign during the evening when people were entertained with live music and invited to bid for donated prizes in an auction. Vinny Atkinson bid £60 for a pair of WEB boxing gloves that were kindly donated by Merseyside boxing champion Rocky Fielding. Vinny gave the gloves back to be auctioned again at the next fundraiser.
There are now 1,448 members of the SOS group and the Merseyside Pensioners Association have given their unanimous backing to the campaign. Over 3,000 signatures have been collected for the petition to stop the extension of the runway at John Lennon airport and the destruction of Oglet Shore, a natural habitat for rare wild life and plants.
The campaign recently coined a new slogan about the proposed airport extension plans: ‘Above us only sky below us only concrete’. The North West does not need another massive airport. Manchester airport is 30 miles away and the increased noise and pollution for local residents will be intolerable.
