Phil, I’ve emailed you about these photos as I am moved by them beyond “Comments”. Is anyone out there equally moved? I find the second photo amazing in that it puts Mike Leigh into the shade, and yet I adore Mike Leigh’s films. It’s just Phil has captured in real life, and in his natural way, the world that Mike Leigh has gone to such pains (as all film makers go to such pains) to re-create. What I love about Phil’s work is what I love about Hockney’s present work: Hockney’s lesson with painting the woods near his house is for us to look right IN FRONT OF US, capture what we can see in front of us and work from that. The same is true of Hanif Kureishi who writes about what he sees.
