From Cable Street to Brick Lane and Nelson Mandela

The film touches on a range of struggles including a reference to the time Nelson Mandela was in prison through the use of the photograph below. For a considerable number of years there was a 24 hour ‘non stop picket’ outside the South African embassy in Trafalgar Square. Last year was the 25th anniversary of the picket which lasted for nearly four years despite efforts by the police to close it down.

Community Care
Over the years my photographs have been used in a number of publications about how the ‘EAST END’ of London has changed. The change was powered by the proximity of the City and the growth of Canary Wharf. An article by Will Hatchett in Community Care in 1990 made use of a number of photographs which suggested the lives of the ordinary East Ender was under threat from developments that were pushing up land and house prices. Twenty years later the article still rings true. It would be possible to slightly ammend the article and add a few new images and you would have an article for today. As time moves on the results of ‘regeneration’ remain the same: causing low income families to move out in the face of higher living costs. Here are some of the original, together with a few unpublished photographs from that period.
