Where’s a Policeman when you want one?
What a wonderful invention is a tripod! Coupled with a shutter release cable I was able to turn this shot of two policeman into a shot of eight. The same two officers appear throughout the image. The work of Artist Ben Slow vibrates from the wall the officers are passing!

The Holland Estate (2)
It was around 30 years ago when I first photographed the Holland Estate on the edge of Tower Hamlets and right next two the City of London. I am delighted that our next film with East End Homes about the East End will introduce the Holland Estate for the first time in our East End series. Possibly some of these photographs will make their way into the film which will be the 4th in our series about East End Lives.

The photograph above was taken in the bathroom which, at the time, was also the kitchen. When the bath was not in use it was covered and provided an extra surface for the kitchen. The flats were ‘modernised’ in the late 1980’s.

Over the coming months I will be working with a number of photographers who will be photographing the Holland Estate and the surrounding area. Their work will form part of an exhibition at the Bishopsgate Institute in October. Some of the photographers have close links with the estate so I am really looking forward to curating and filming their work with Hazuan Hashim.

Checking it out
You could never be short of second hand fabrics or clothes in the East End. Street markets and car boot sales abound and have been a feature of the area for decades. Regretably the gentrification in and around the Brick Lane area is eroding market life. These two photographs represent the continuity of unofficial markets during the past 30 years.

Altab Ali
Artist Alice Sielle appears for a third time in one of our films this July. Here she is examining some work produced for our film ‘From Cable Street to Brick Lane’. Using the only known photograph of Altab Ali she produced a number of pieces of work. Altab Ali was 24 when he was murdered in an unprovoked knife attack. He was walking home from work when the attack occurred in Alder street. Following the attack the local community organised a number of demonstrations and an ‘Action Committee against Racist attacks’ was established. Thousands attended a rally in Hyde Park and marchers went on to Downing Street and handed in a petition. Alice used the Brick Lane Mosque as a backdrop for her work and referenced the different faith groups that have occupied the space that is now a Mosque.
